Can a man with very low sperm count use his own sperm for IVF?

In many cases, yes. Depending on the situation, sperm from the ejaculate may be used for ICSI. If sperm cannot be found in the semen, sperm retrieval may sometimes be possible.

What if there is no sperm in the semen?

Azoospermia requires further evaluation to determine whether sperm production is impaired or sperm are blocked from reaching the ejaculate. In selected cases, sperm retrieval combined with IVF and ICSI may be possible.

Does low sperm count increase the risk of infertility for the couple?

Yes, a low sperm count can reduce the probability of natural conception, especially when other semen parameters are also abnormal. But no single semen parameter can determine fertility by itself.

Should the wife also have fertility tests if the husband has low sperm count?

Yes. Both partners should be evaluated because infertility can involve male factors, female factors or both.
